Who is We
Who is we

Shivanee N. Ramlochan

"Who is We?" closed today at Granderson Lab, Belmont. To walk through the exhibit is to be suffused in the textural there are layers to the mixed media compositions that feel occluded even from themselves, in the way different parts of a country, even a single city, are unaware of what their neighbours are dreaming. And you can be certain there are dreams here, manifestations crackling energetically just beneath the paint. Vivid, concentrated and interrogative, "who is we?" eludes the illusory, even in the depths of technical abstraction. If I have seen more fiercely socially committed work by a contemporary Trinidadian visual artist of late, I'm hard pressed to imagine where. Nor do I need to. The realm, vast and attentive, of a collective imagination, is right here. And it looks like all ah we.

Passed through Granderson Lab, @aliceyardinsta to check @elechitodd installation of work.A collaged layered sensibility, of muted colors, cuts of spears, jumping, wanting to jump, jump up and out at you. We had an interesting conference around the possibilities of collage politics towards structuralism. Collage has this inate intent to always wanting to become more. What that means can be monumental, and monumentally quiet. During the time I met up Chris Cozier, Robert Young @theclothofficial , @baseline.projects Marielle Forbes. Today I caught up with meh colleagues, dat nice.

Around town...temporary gestures. and negotiations with public...new works and showing options by Elechi Todd.
".... I am trying to capture from the faded, pissy walls of Tunapuna, to the plastic, tacky and gritty opulence of materials of our carnival and that specific thing in the drums that does raise your pores.....Who could “we” be, if we lead with our own desires and beliefs?.....Arrive at our own gates?"

Elechi Todd is one of the best up and coming artists in Trinidad. Go today and catch the final day of his exhibition "Who Is We" at the Granderson Lab, Erthig Road in Belmont. His stuff is very, very good! My words can't do the art justice, you gotta see if for yourself.
